The Department of English was established in 2005 and placed under the Centre for Modern Languages. A year later, in 2006, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was created and the Department of English became part of this Faculty. Located in the Frank Roberts Building, about 150 metres away from the Mataheko Campus, the Department of English runs a Bachelor of Arts in English programme, as well as administers the university-wide course in English Language and Communication Skills. It also has the approval of the Academic Board to introduce a certificate course in English for Francophone students and others wishing to improve their English proficiency levels for upward social mobility.
To train scholars who will apply their critical and analytical skills to solve social and professional problems.
To provide a programme of training in English that is flexible, interactive and employment oriented, and ensures a holistic appreciation of English in all its forms and uses.
